Namibia
What awaits you as a traveler in Namibia and what should you look out for? We'll give you all the information you need for your travel planning.
Best travel time
There's no easy answer to that question. It depends not only on the region, but also on what you want to do in Namibia. Generally, there is a dry season, which lasts from May to October, and a rainy season from January to April.
If you want to see the so-called Big Five (buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, and rhino) on a safari, you should be in Namibia during the dry season. The chances of spotting a buffalo taking a refreshing drink at a watering hole are much higher then. Other outdoor activities such as hiking and camping are also more pleasant during the cooler months from May to September.
If you want to take home beautiful holiday photos full of lush green savannas, you're better off during the rainy season. Only then does the country truly blossom, and the countless national parks, in particular, show themselves at their best.
ATTENTION: Certain areas are flooded during this time, and some roads may become impassable due to mud.
Travel planning: Are vaccinations necessary, do I need a visa, what else should I pack?
At present, there are no mandatory vaccinations for direct entry from Germany to Namibia. However, always stay informed through the Robert Koch Institute, as this can change at any time. All standard vaccinations should still be up to date.
As a German citizen, you do not need a visa for a holiday (under 90 days a year). Instead, you will be issued a free entry stamp (Visitor's Entry Permit) upon arrival at all official border crossings.
What you should definitely take with you:
- Passport + copy + your other travel documents
(insurance!) - Adapter for power sockets
- Sun protection
- Insect repellent
- Cash (Namibian Dollar) + credit card

Windhoek
Windhoek is the capital of Namibia. Surrounded by mountains, it's no wonder that its name comes from the winds that gust there throughout the year. Compared to other capitals, Windhoek is rather small with just under half a million inhabitants. Nevertheless, the city and its surroundings offer everything to make a traveler's heart beat faster.
Windhoek Tours: Culture and Nature
For historical reasons, the Namibian capital is home to a mix of different people. From indigenous peoples to Africans, Germans, and other European settlers – Windhoek is a cultural melting pot.
If you want to take a closer look at the country's history, you should visit the Independence Memorial Museum. It is one of the most interesting sights there and sheds light on the country's path to independence and its rich cultural heritage. The Christ Church is another popular attraction in Windhoek. Built in 1907, the church is a remnant of German colonial times and worth a visit for history buffs.
For nature lovers, Windhoek is a great starting point. The city's central location is ideal for all kinds of excursions. The Daan Viljoen Game Reserve, for example, is only a short drive away. Tours and the aforementioned safaris also often start in the capital.

Is Windhoek dangerous?
Anyone spending their vacation in Windhoek should be attentive and take some precautions. While there is no immediate danger, tourists sometimes fall victim to theft or even robberies. Therefore, travelers should particularly avoid walks in the outskirts of the city and generally be mindful – also when using credit cards, as credit card fraud is not uncommon, especially among tourists.
