What do Ryan Reynolds, Justin Bieber, and Shania Twain have in common? That's right: They're from Canada! The country north of the USA is – besides its allegedly extremely polite population – primarily known for its endless and largely uninhabited expanses.

What do you need to know for a trip into these uninhabited expanses? We'll give you a little insight into Canada here! ↓

When to vacation in Canada? What's the best time to travel?

The climate in Canada is similar to ours. This means that summer is the warmest season, autumn and spring are milder, while winter is cold. However, Canada is very large. Depending on the region, the weather can be different than expected; for example, the West Coast generally has a milder climate, while the East Coast and the North are much colder.

Nevertheless, it can generally be said that those who want to visit national parks, go camping, and swimming are well-advised to do so in the summer months, but also in spring and autumn. Those who prefer to go skiing or snowboarding should definitely plan their vacation for the winter.

Canada: How long is your flight time?

If you want to go to Canada, you have to cross the Atlantic Ocean. That takes time. You'll spend around 11 hours on the plane for a non-stop flight from Frankfurt.

PS: If you fly Business Class with Discover Airlines, we'll sweeten your flight with a delicious 1SHOT Classic!

Stay in Canada: How long can I stay without a visa?

Don't worry. You have plenty of time to explore Canada – even without a visa. As a German citizen, you can stay for up to 6 months without any problems. So you don't need any official documents – but you shouldn't forget your passport!

Bilingual Canada: Where is French spoken?

Canada officially has two official languages: English and French. English is more widespread and is spoken virtually throughout the country. French, on the other hand, is found only in some provinces. Quebec is the only province that officially counts only French as an official language.

What is the most beautiful city in Canada?

Beauty is – of course – in the eye of the beholder. Nevertheless, we've made our decision: Vancouver is, for us, the most beautiful city in Canada. It wins because it's directly on the sea, yet you can also enjoy the fascinating mountain scenery. Furthermore, the skyline is magically eye-catching, especially with the city's sparkling glass high-rises.

Other beautiful cities in the country that are also worth a visit include:

  • Toronto
  • Montreal
  • Quebec

Vancouver

Vancouver doesn't just impress with its scenery. The many opportunities to experience nature, culture or cuisine there are also remarkable.

Outdoor Activities in Vancouver

A visit to Stanley Park is a must on any trip to Vancouver. With an area of approximately 400 hectares, this enormous park in the middle of the city is one of its most popular attractions. A network of an incredible 200 km of walking trails winds through it. But there are also other sights such as the Vancouver Aquarium, Deadman's Island, or Siwash Rock, a rock just off the park's northwest coast.

For those who want to experience the city and the view from a different perspective, there are several viewpoints in and around the city, such as the Capilano Suspension Bridge, a free-swinging 13-meter-long and 70-meter-high rope bridge.

The immediate surroundings of Vancouver also make the hearts of outdoor enthusiasts beat faster. In the nearby North Shore Mountains, there are also countless hiking and biking trails, as well as – weather permitting – slopes for skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing.

Arts & Culture

Vancouver's art and culture scene has a lot to offer. The city is home to a number of museums and galleries, including the Museum of Anthropology and the Vancouver Art Gallery, one of the largest art museums in the country. Those who prefer live performances also have many choices here. The city is full of plays, concerts, and shows. History lovers will also not miss out. The lively Gastown district is teeming with Victorian buildings full of souvenir shops, art galleries, and stores. Another well-known attraction there is the Steam Clock, one of the few steam-powered clocks worldwide!

Culinary Canada

One of the country's most famous specialties is, of course, Poutine. This dish features gravy served over fries, topped with a helping of cheese. Another bestseller is maple syrup, for which Canada is world-renowned. It's no coincidence that the country's flag features a maple leaf!

However, Vancouver also offers other delicacies for foodies. The city is known for its diverse culinary scene, ranging from traditional Chinese dim sum to the popular farm-to-table concept. A wide selection of restaurants and cafes is further complemented by many breweries and wineries.

By the way: Did you know that Canada has a pronounced coffee culture? As a British colony, the country initially started with tea, but now Canada is among the biggest coffee drinkers worldwide!

Vancouver on foot

In fact, everything in Downtown Vancouver is within easy walking distance. If you eventually get tired of walking, you can use public transport. The public transport network in Vancouver is well developed, and buses, trains, or subways will quickly take you anywhere you want to go.

Cycling is also a popular way to explore the Canadian metropolis, as there are many cycle paths with beautiful views.

And if all else fails, there are always Vancouver taxis or the widely available Uber.
