FRAGE ALLER FRAGEN: WAS IST NACHHALTIGKEIT?

THE QUESTION OF ALL QUESTIONS: WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY?

Sustainability: You read the word absolutely everywhere now, don't you? But what exactly does it really mean? We'll clarify what sustainability entails and why it's so important.

NEED FOR CLARIFICATION? THIS IS SUSTAINABILITY!

First things first: facts, facts, facts. So that we can ensure we are all on the same page. Let's start with a classic – the definition.

Sustainability refers to the careful use of resources in such a way that the needs of current generations are met without compromising the needs of future generations.

So, we establish that the world's limited resources are the focus. These should be used thoughtfully and carefully, as they are important not only for us but also for future generations. Resources in this case are not only materials, but also, for example, labor.

SUSTAINABILITY IS NOT ALWAYS SUSTAINABILITY. OR: THE THREE PILLARS

Taking another theoretical look at sustainability, it can officially be divided into three pillars:

  1. Ecological Sustainability:
This pillar deals with the protection and preservation of the Earth's natural resources, such as air, water, and soil.

  2. Social Sustainability:
Social sustainability refers to ensuring social justice, equal opportunities, and access to education, healthcare, and basic necessities for all people, regardless of their social status.

  3. Economic Sustainability:
This is about creating an economic system that is stable in the long term without promoting resource depletion. Companies should act responsibly and implement sustainable business practices.

Reality and theory are – as always – not necessarily transferable one-to-one. In practice, the three pillars cannot always be precisely separated. They are usually intertwined and have fluid transitions. But in the end, all that matters is that something happens in the spirit of sustainability.

Did you know, ...

...that your devices in sleep mode account for 5 - 10% of your electricity consumption?

Is your TV or laptop in standby mode instead of turned off? That actually uses more electricity than you think!

Here's what you can do:

Turn off devices you're not using instead of leaving them in standby mode. Use power strips with an on/off switch and turn them off when not in use!
